Methy Barrett...
I usually wake up alone in my bed, cold and empty even in warm summers, but it wasn't supposed to be empty this time when I opened my eyes in protest of bright morning light invading my windows. I remember closing my curtains last night.
I checked beside me, and the bed was indeed empty, like no one had slept there all night. It's almost like he wasn't there. But he was.
I tied my messy brunette hair in a bun and waited for him to come out of the closet.
He came out after a good five minutes, which made me wonder how long he'd been in there, because he takes longer to get ready than any teenage girl going on a date with her first boyfriend.
I looked at him when he walked out in his crisp white shirt and black pants, carrying his black coat on his forearm; it always looked like a handsome uniform on his muscular body. His raven-black hair was pushed into a neat hairstyle.
The sight would make any girlfriend drool and fall on her knees for her gorgeous boyfriend, but not me. Not anymore!
Thomas and I have been together for a good amount of time. Everything was good in the beginning, but recently something has fallen off, and I can't point it out. Something is missing from our relationship. He looks lost.
He didn't even say good morning when he saw me. I don't expect him to kiss me, considering I am still in bed and haven't brushed my teeth. He is a clean freak, and making out before the shower is gross to him.
"Good morning, Thomas..."
I broke the silence.
He turned towards me, still looking at his phone. I wondered what he had on his phone, which he found more interesting than his girlfriend, whom he is meeting after god knows how many days.
I was so happy that he was finally back; I had the whole week planned for us. He came home yesterday. I was expecting some action, but he said we have the whole week for us and he needs to rest after a long drive.
I tried to be a supportive girlfriend, and he was right; we had the whole week. Until he got the phone call last night and said he was called back to work.
So there he is, leaving again for god knows how many days.
I should have been angry, mad, and thrown my hands up, but it's against my nature. So, like a good girl, I was sitting there disappointed, emotionally piled up and disturbed.
For a fraction of a second, I saw his lip curve at whatever he saw on the phone, but it disappeared as he looked at me.
"Good morning... Sorry, I was thinking about work; I forgot to wish you a good morning."
I looked at his good looking face, but it doesn't excite me anymore. I think we both know that things are going south.
In fact, I was expecting him to say something else. Maybe something like... Sorry, Methy. It's not working anymore. But I'll miss you.
Or maybe something like... You are too boring for me. I am out.
But none of it came out. Maybe he was planning to tell me this on the call after getting out of my house, so I won't throw hands on him.
Huh! Relationships are too much work, and I am too boring for it. I won't blame Thomas if he leaves me. But it's sure going to crack my heart; I have grown attached to him in the time we have spent together, and I am not someone who breaks relationships easily. It was always hard. Maybe this is what they call unhealthy attachment, and I shouldn't be feeding it, because I am psychologist.
But no one is emotionally brave in this world, not even therapists.
To be honest, I don't want Thomas to leave me because I won't be able to cope with the loneliness after that. I agree that he is hardly home, but at least he gives me a sense that there is someone for me.
"I am leaving."
He said while pushing his phone into his pocket.
I got up from the bed, while fixing my silk night dress which barely covered my ass and boobs. A very embarrassing move to seduce him last night, and I wanted my bed to swallow me when he slept unfazed beside me all night.
I have never failed so miserably before.
"It's only seven in the morning... We can at least have breakfast together?"
He didn't look pleased with the suggestion.
"It will waste time, and you aren't even freshened up yet... You know the traffic..."
He slid on his coat.
I still don't have complete information about his job. I just know that he handles security for someone. But the faded scars on his face and body tell a different story; they don't harm his beauty, though. He is a good looking guy.
"Fine!"
I didn't want to look clingy.
"See you"
He walked out of the bedroom, and I heard the main door of the house slamming shut.
Not even a goodbye kiss!
He was gone!
And it's been more than a month since I last heard from him.
Maybe that was his way to break up with me. No drama or arguments, just ghosting and avoiding responsibility. I tried to call him many times, but calls went to voicemail. I checked the news for any murder or missing persons news, but there wasn't any, so that ended my doubt.
He ghosted me after dating and moving in together. Anyway, he was hardly home, and so were his things. It's like he never lived here.
All these days, he was fooling me, or maybe I was fooling myself despite all those noticeable hints. Thomas was never a talker; he always avoided complicated conversations. It was indeed an easy way out.
The girl sitting in front of me grabbed my attention again; I shouldn't drift into my past when I am consulting a client.
Thomas is a closed case; I have to get over to him.
"So Amy, how was your day? Didn't you play around the pool this afternoon?"
I tried to cheer her up; she loves the pool in her house, but she was quiet. She usually doesn't talk, a few words sometimes, but never a full sentence.
My job is to make her open up, and I don't have time. Today is the ultimatum. If she doesn't talk today, then she will be moved to some other therapists. I don't want to be a failure.
"Look, Amy... You are a smart girl; I know you know that. I am here to help you... You were coming here for the whole summer, and you sometimes felt comfortable speaking to me."
Only a few words like No! Yes! But still progress, right? It means she trusts me.
She is a cute little girl with porcelain skin and golden sand hair, blue ocean eyes and red lips.
I wonder what her parents look like because she is definitely a uniquely beautiful little girl.
I have never seen her parents. They never came to meet me. Weird!
Sad thing that she doesn't talk.
I looked at her file; there is only one traumatising experience in her life, which can be disturbing for a girl who is so young.
She fell into the pool and almost drowned.
My heart aches for this little angel.
We both heard a loud honk outside.
I closed the file with a sigh. I failed!
"I guess this is our last meeting, Amy... It was great meeting you. You are a brave girl..."
I smiled at her, and she stared at me blankly; her skin was pale, like she had been rescued a minute ago from drowning. She was still in trauma. I could see that.
"I wish you could share something with me; I would love to help you."
She got off the couch and started walking towards the main door, and I watched her like a loser. Recently, I have been failing a lot. First, Thomas ghosted me and now this little girl, Amy.
Life is becoming depressing for me while helping others.
Just when Amy was about to exit, she stopped at the door and turned to face me. Her eyes were hopeful.
"If you want to help me. Can you ask my Mom, why she pushed me into the pool?"
She ran out, leaving me frozen to my bones behind her.
What the fuck?
There was another loud honk. Amy just left in her car; then who's honking?
Was I expecting someone else?
I don't think so!
